Puerto Montt ANTARCTIC Andes

Santiago is the capital of Chile.  We sadly left the MV Discovery, after a great experience, in the port of Valparaiso and traveled to Santiago by bus.

Santiago was a great disappointment to us.  Our city tour guide completely skipped Valparaiso and we quickly went around town on the way to the hotel. We did not stop at the landmark Virgin Mary statue, on San Cristobal Hill, which is a Santiago highlight.  It seemed like we were being rushed and the guide wanted to get home quickly for something more important.

Our "Folklore Show and Dinner" was more a nightclub act than a show presenting Chilean dances and their history.  We went away feeling that this portion of the trip was well below the level that we had experienced on all previous days of our trip.

ANVS0002 (Street-side vendor in Valparaiso taken from the moving bus on the way out of town)   ANVS0006 (Privately owned high-speed roads had vendors at each of the toll gates)

ANVS0009 (An old oven and water jug at the rest stop on the way into Santiago)   ANVS0032 (The historic presidential palace, it was unclear how it is used today, we had a quick walk through the middle of the building)

ANVS0038 (Even the inside courtyard has iron bars on the windows, and there were armed guards around the building)   ANVS0048 (A monument to the indigenous people in one of the main squares)

ANVS0052 (The old and the new coexist in downtown Santiago)   ANVS0069 (A photo of a hazy Santiago taken on the ride up San Cristobal Hill)

ANFD0002 (The "tourist" restaurant where the Folkloric Show & Dinner was presented) ANFD0007 (Our tables were on the side of the stage to view this native Chilean dance)

ANFD0015 (There was this version of the Chilean national dance, but then audience participation took up most of the show)   ANFD0028 (Same native Chilean dance, with different costumes)
