Beagle Channel ANTARCTIC Chilean Fjords

The city of Punta Arenas was our first stop, and shore excursions, in Chile.  The photos are placed into three groupings:

Punta Arenas is located on the Straits of Magellan, which is a short-cut around the tip of South America.  Once discovered the Chilean government started charging for its use.

It has a population of 110,000 and is the capital of the Magellanic and Antarctic Region XII.  Sheep ranching started here in the late 1800's followed by gold and carbon mines, petroleum, and fishing.

Driving Outside Town

On our way to the penguin reserve the guide pointed out some "wild" animals. We also passed some of the Punta Arenas industry.

ANPA0005 (A Rhea, which is a cousin to the Ostrich)   ANPA0007 (The bus stopped and they ran away)

ANPA0054 (This group of Rhea just kept on eating their lunch)   ANPA0057 (A South American Fox)

ANPA0061 (Cranes,  Egrets or Herons?)   ANPA0063 (Proof there was a fishing industry)

Otway Sound Penguin Reserve

The Otway Sound Penguin Preserve is one of two penguin colonies in the area.  They are both populated by the Magellanic penguins, which are also called Jackass penguins for their characteristic bray.  These penguins make their nests in burrows in the ground.

ANPA0018 (The children were much bigger than in Antarctica)   ANPA0019 (And every one liked to pose)

ANPA0022 (OK, line up for our photo)   ANPA0023 (Are they looking? Get ready)

ANPA0025 (Ignore them, maybe they will go away)   ANPA0026 (Duck your head)

ANPA0027 (Mom, Dad, how do I get down?)   ANPA0028 (I'll just jump)

ANPA0031 (Ah, we're on the beach for a quick swim and then a nap)   ANPA0033 (The perfect place for a rest)

ANPA0812 (They're coming, sound like a Jackass)   ANPA0039 (We're so spread out they will never find us)

ANPA0040 (You have to stand up straight, like this)   ANPA0047 (The long boardwalk home)

The City Tour

What are the highlights of Punta Arenas, Chile?  There is the municipal cemetery which was established in 1894 and is a city within itself.  There is the Museum of Remembrances, run by the University of Magallanes, which is a collection of artifacts from the area's past.  The main square has a statue of Ferdinand Magellan.  The city overlook shows off the houses painted in many colors.

ANPA0104 (One of the most beautiful in South America, the cemetery walkways are lined with trimmed cypress trees)   ANPA0107 (A cemetery walkway)

ANPA0108 (As a city cemetery there are fancy graves and not-so-fancy graves)   ANPA0116 (A bit over the top and one that takes plain to the extreme)

ANPA0118 (It is still summer in January)   ANPA0119 (A unique blossom by the cemetery entrance)

ANPA0136 (The Remembrance Museum had a rail fence planted with flowers)   ANPA0122 (A cloudy day, wagons, a Ford tractor, and building from the area)

ANPA0126 ( A milk wagon)   ANPA0128 (An old wagon is a combination of texture, hues and shapes)

ANPA0141  (In front of the History Museum this colorful flower)   ANPA0142 (Across from the History Museum there is a statue with graffiti and a colorful home)

ANPA0143 (Magellan's statue looks over the strait that he discovered and is named after him)   ANPA0146 (This Indian statue is special)

ANPA0147 (Rub his toe and you will return to Punta Arenas)   ANPA0150 (The roofs are colorful, as well as the houses, maybe to brighten up the long winters)

ANPA0153 (From the overlook you can see the Strait of Magellan, the MV Discovery and a good portion of Punta Arenas)   ANPA0159 (No lookout would be complete without flowers)
