Santiago ANTARCTIC Beagle Channel

The Andes are the longest mountain range in the world.  The highest peak (just over the border in Argentina) is 22,825 feet high.  We had a day-long bus trip from Santiago to the Portillo Ski Area high in the Andes.  After our previous bad day in Santiago this turned out to be the best on-shore excursion we had.  The guide (Roberto) was the most informative and spoke English that we could easily understand.  The lunch was outstanding and the views spectacular.  It was a fine way to complete our trip with good memories.

ANAN0003 (In Chile, they are not a drive-in or a drive-through, but an "AutoMac")   ANAN0007 (Monument commemorating the final battle for independence from Spain)

ANAN0019 (In the distance is Mt. Aconcgua the highest peak in the Andes (just over the border in Argentina) at 22,825 feet)   ANAN0024 (A mine train and the river gap where the "Unknown Soldier" jumped with his horse many years ago)

ANAN0027 (We were in the Andes, but it looks like Arizona)   ANAN0028 (A huaso, roughly equivalent to the Argentine Gaucho, shares the road with us)

ANAN0034 (Why are his brakes smoking?)   ANAN0038 (He just came down these 28 curves)

ANAN0047 (Laguna del Inca at the Portillo Ski Area)   ANAN0052 (The Portillo Hotel and some of the ski slopes)

ANAN0056 (The view from the dining room)   ANAN0059 (A view of the central Andes, yes the water color is real)
