Lemaire Channel ANTARCTIC Gerlache (N)

Port Lockroy was discovered in 1903 and is the most popular tourist stop in Antarctica (in 1998-1999 there were 6,473 visitors).  Our landing was at Jougla Point where there is a Gentoo penguin rookery.

There was a whaling station here until about 1931.  A British station was established in 1943 and was staffed almost continuously until 1962.  There is currently a small post office and souvenir shop that is open during portions of the summer, but it is on an island and we landed on a small peninsula.

As you can tell, the weather improved greatly from the morning at Lemaire Channel.
