Drake (S) ANTARCTIC Gerlache (S)

It had become an overcast day with some snow falling.  We were scheduled to arrive at Deception Island just before noon.

Deception Island got its name because it is the caldera of a volcano and it is hard to see the harbor inside.  There is only a small opening (230 meters wide) that allows ships to enter the harbor.  It is a deception that there is a harbor at all, let alone one of the safest natural harbors in the world.

Despite the bad weather the captain took us into the harbor, we had a quick look at the whaling station ruins and then went back out to sea.  Due to the weather our zodiac boat rides at Cuverville Island were cancelled and we headed down Gerlache Strait to the Lemaire Channel.

ANDI0003 (In the mist, our first iceberg)   ANDI0008 (And then another iceberg, with more blue ice on the bottom)

ANDI0013 (Smooth from the waves or from the snow fall, rough from where it broke from the ice flow)   ANDI0014 (Even in black-and-white icebergs are floating sculptures)

ANDI0020 (Sometimes icebergs flip over when they become top heavy, and the algae covering the bottom becomes visible)   ANDI0022 (Our first view of the opening into the Caldera.  It really is a deception.)

ANDI0024 (Now we start to see the opening)   ANDI0025 (The side walls are vertical and very rough.  Snow is falling and a few birds can be seen)

ANDI0026 (We are close to the opening)   ANDI0032 (It is overcast and snowing but we can make out part of the old whaling station and a sailboat at anchor inside the Caldera)
