The Drake Passage separates the southern tip of South America and the northern tip of Antarctica. The Antarctica Peninsula points toward South America and is where the summer weather is the most comfortable and the ice is likely to be away from the Antarctic continent. The Drake Passage is referred to as either the "Drake Lake" or the "Drake Snake" depending on the roughness when you travel. You cross the Antarctic Convergence where the northern and southern waters meet. When we went over the waves were 20-40 feet, so we had a bit of up-and-down and some side-to-side movement. The crew referred to it as a bit of rock-and-roll. We left Ushuaia in the late afternoon and it took all night, the next day, and all the next night to cross the Drake Passage. The time was taken up learning about Antarctica and getting our "sea legs".
